Surfer and music lover Harrison Schultz joins the On the Coast and The Times team

Hey all, I’m Harrison Schultz and I’m the new journalist with On the Coast, a sister paper of The Times covering the Southern Vales.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been making trips all around the Fleurieu Peninsula; first with my family for sporting events like Surf Life Saving Carnivals at Moana, then for chilled out surf sessions with my brother and when I finally turned 18, I started to explore the wine and other amazing produce the region has to offer.

I think the best memory I have in recent years within the area would be driving out to a popular campground and sleeping under the stars before surfing the next morning.

The silence and clarity of the sky that night was beautiful.

Now 24, I’ve spent the last few years visiting the area more frequently and have begun to find favourite places to hang out (you’ll have to ask me in person to get that gossip though).

Having grown up in metro Adelaide, I’ve always found there to be something special about travelling south to the area, and when the opportunity to work as a journalist in the area came up it was one too good to pass up.

My passion for journalism has reinforced my passion to learn and to educate others as accurately as possible.

I believe that if you are willing to learn, understand and appreciate all sides to a story then you will always deliver the best possible material.

As a result of this style of work ethic, I decided last year to take up a Bachelor of Science with the University of Adelaide part time.

Whilst I’m yet to decide the exact path I’d like to travel with the science degree, one aspect of it which will become evident is my devotion to science journalism.

Outside of work you’ll find me surfing, or at least giving it my best crack, reading about science, listening to music, attending gigs or just being active in anyway possible.

Hopefully over the next few months I’ll be able to meet plenty of you in the community.

To help get settled in and really start building a connection with you all, I’ve set up a Facebook and Instagram which you can check out using @onthecoastnews
