The future leaders of our community are already making plans about how they can make an impact on their peers today.

Victor Harbor R-7 School’s student leaders for 2018 have big ideas when it comes to improving the school in tangible ways.

Kayla and Charlie are the heads of the group, Taya and Jason are deputies, Charlotte is a team member, and Cody and Kadin represent the special education unit.

Charlie said he was proud to represent the student cohort. “I want to improve the school and give back, and just help out,” he said.

“I’m excited to see where we can go with the school.”

Kayla found inspiration in the leaders in year levels above her.

“I saw the student leaders before me and I looked up to them. I wanted to be one of those people,” she said.

The leaders have a range of programs and projects they want to see up and running, including a year seven-only area for lunch and recess, a nature play space created with ideas from all year levels, and SAPSASA teams for golf and girls football.

“We want a better area to learn in, starting with the playground,” Kayla said.

“We’d have natural things – no plastic and recycled stuff,” Charlotte said.

“One part is each class will have a different tree and they’ll look after it,” Taya said.

They are all part of separate committees which look at sport, nature play, fundraising and student voice.

Taya said it was a big job to give the other students a voice when decisions were being made about the school.

And, Kadin said, it was important that everyone put in effort to make each student felt welcome.

“We want to learn sign language. We have some students with a disability and they’re year sevens now, and they want to go to the big yard (during breaks). It could help,” he said.

Jason was keen to work with all classes so they could collectively put an end to littering and bullying.

“Most of us have been at this school since reception. We’ve learnt so much and it’s a fun school and we want to give back,” he said.

“It’s really special to give back to the school that’s given us so much over the last eight years,” Kayla said.

Student representative council teaching co-ordinator Alex Ball was full of praise for the new student leaders.

“They’ve been so proactive and passionate with all these ideas of what they want to do and how they do it.”
