Racing champion Colin Bond to speak at Vintage and Classic charity dinner.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Few drivers reach the heights of racing in Australia as Colin Bond once did.

The prolific and versatile driver did what few others could, winning not only at Bathurst, but also claiming the highest honours at multiple Australian Rally Championships.

Bond is the guest speaker at this years Charity Dinner for the McLaren Vintage and Classic, an event that draws in crowds of motoring, food and wine enthusiasts from across South Australia.

Bond first hit the racing scene as a hill climber, claiming three NSW Hillclimb titles in the 60s, driving a Lynx-Peugeot S/C.

A relative unknown, he was chosen to partner Tony Roberts when one of three Holden teams entered Monaros for the 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 500, the event now known as the Bathurst 1000.

On a day when the Fords crumbled, with tyres unsuitable for the race, the Holdens stood strong, putting all three Monaros (including one driven by a young Peter Brock) into the top six positions, with Bond and Roberts winning.

After that win, it was the Australian Rally Championship that drew his eye, as he would go on to win in 1971, 1972 and 1974 driving a Holden Torana.

Bond also won the 1975 Australian Touring Car Championship in a Holden Torana and was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2002.
