Mount Compass defeat Myponga-Sellicks in round five of the GSFL

Compass was coming off a telling loss to Willunga and Pongy were tails up coming from a resounding win over the Hawks. Pongy were finding targets early and were first to go forward.

Their efforts were rewarded when Einthal scored from a set shot. Compass were slow to start but that did not detract from a great tussle between Miller and Hoban in the ruck. After a few behinds, Z Vitkunas pulled a miraculous goal out of the chaos.

Green too was now proving effective behind the game rebounding the ball quickly in Pinyon’s way for him to mark strongly in a one on one contest to bring up Compass’ second.

T Corbett was in everything at half back repelling the Pongy attacks and Flintham was hard at work around the packs for Pongy, using sheer hard work to find Haverty alone at home to bring up a much needed Pongy goal. First quarter score was Pongy 2-2 to Compass 3-4.

McKenzie and Brokenshire were up to the challenge sending the ball forward where Schulz goaled. The pressure played into the hands of J Hutchinson with one goal and Merritt with two who capitalised on the advantage afforded by the likes of Bastetzko and Hill who took all the chances on offer. Half time scores were Pongy with a slender lead 5-4 to Compass 4-9.

In the third, ball handling errors continued to plague the Compass game as one on one pressure applied by the game Pongy boys continued to force errors. M Corbett, always hard at the ball and Veide forever creating something out of nothing began to take its toll on the determined Pongy on ballers.

Compass found a welcome path through Merritt to Parsons who marked strongly and goaled putting Compass back in front.

S Hutchinson got involved in some inspirational plays for Pongy but to no avail.

Schultz used his skill in and around the pack to put the ball cleverly on to Davis unattended at half forward. Pongy was left goalless for the quarter. Third quarter scores were Pongy 5-6 to Compass 6-13.

Parsons set the agenda for the rest of the game scoring a major and capitalising on tough, hard work from Scudds, Green, Hoban and Veide. Z Vitkunas helped himself to three successive goals and work horse M. Corbett one goal as Compass cruised to a comfortable but tightly contested win.

Full credit to the Pongy players for coming out to make Compass work for their win. Final scores were Pongy 10-9 to Compass 15-6.
