Every June long weekend, the Great Southern and Southern football leagues face off in the biggest battles of Fleurieu Peninsula footy.
This year’s matches were fought out at Strathalbyn on Saturday, June 9.
The day started with an open women’s match, which Great Southern won by a huge margin – 17-5 (107) to 0-0 (0).
Bree Leibhardt (Strathalbyn) was awarded the inaugural Grant Levy Medal, her co-captain Emma Gryczewski (McLaren) was second best, receiving the South Adelaide Award.

Next up was the under 15 boys match.
The Southern Football League had been on the loser’s end of the under 15 association matches against Great Southern over recent encounters, but in 2018, the proud association was going to do something about it and they did, winning by 25 points.
Copley, Van Jaarsveldt, Stummer-Harvey and Horne were best for Southern and Draper, McLaren, Headon, Johnson, Hicks and M Roberts were best for Great Southern.

Following the under 15s was the under 17 ½ boys association game.
It was the second quarter where the game broke open, and in the end Great Southern prevailed to defeat Southern by 45 points.

In the big match of the day, Southern reigned supreme for back-to-back A grade association game wins against Great Southern, this time winning by 11 points.
Best for Great Southern were Davis, C Tonkin, L Mathews, M Merrett, Perrey, M Corbett. For Southern there was none better on the ground than Vandermeer, and he had support from Reeve, Albanese, Arnold, Kearsley and McAllister.
