Encounter Bay visited Willunga on Saturday and nearly took home a win, but for the tremendous efforts of Willunga’s back lines.
Encounter Bay’s midfield were fast and accurate, as usual, even though Demon Bass won most of the ruck duels, but the Demons backmen were on the ball and fended off attack after attack.
The first quarter was an Encounter Bay win. With the Eagles eight scoring shots to the Demons mere three, it looked like the visitors had the ascendancy. Karpany started well and kept the momentum up all game.
The second term was a different story with Willunga matching the Bays to ensure that there was going to be a real battle all day. This was an arm wrestle and at the main break the sides were only separated by nine points, in Encounter Bay’s favour day.
The third term was another fine example of skilful ball use by both sides. W Hooper and Kleinig were fabulous for Encounter Bay and Demons’ Beath and Ficken were in great touch. Collier was a key Willunga star holding Davis-Neale to a single goal for the match. At the last change Bays were still up by nine points.
The final term promised to be a spectacle, and it was. The Demons forays forward were rewarded and their defence was a rebounding machine. Willunga had a surge and were a touch harder at the ball, which kept them in reach and eventually saw them take the lead for the first time in the match. It was a thin margin the Demons held onto, as when the final siren sounded the score board showed the home side four points up.
There were no passengers in these two sides. They both played great footy.
Some outstanding efforts with Karpany finishing with five goals, Costello, a senior colt and Crispin played magnificently for the Bays. For the Demons Beath was best supported by Alexopoulos and Altus and young Martin who kicked three goals and could have had a couple more.
Brown’s run was a highlight as he ran down and kicked two goals from his position in the back six and Standfield stood tall all day at half forward. It is still anybody’s season and the next eight rounds are going to be great to watch.
