The new paddling season began on July 1, with the blessing of the boats and the ‘dotting of the eyes’ on the three dragon-boats belonging to the Coorong Dragons.
President Jerry Saunders made special mention of the grant received from the Alexandrina Council, which enabled the third dragon-boat to be decorated during the month -long off-season. The boats have the club’s colours of dark blue, light blue and orange. Reverend Allan Jones blessed both the fleet and the paddlers.
The eyes of the three boats were ‘dotted’ with red paint on the eyeballs of the ceremonial dragon heads. Mayor of Alexandrina Keith Parkes and his wife performed the duty on one boat. The other eyes were dotted by club member Sue Jones and founding member Annie Harris.
The club is seeking new paddlers, especially in the 40-60 years and 60 years plus age groups. Over the age of 10 is still welcome to join. Training sessions are planned for each Sunday morning from now and Tuesday, beginning in early August. Paddling is from the boat ramp by the Goolwa Aquatic Club.
Sweeps and coaches are qualified and safety conscious with life jackets and paddles supplied. The only requirements are a water bottle, sunglasses and a hat. For details contact president Jerry Saunders on 0429 648 609 or secretary Bridget Chapman on 0457 458 996.
