It held much promise as Southern District ventured to Renmark to contest the State Country Football Championships. However, it was not to be as the side coached by Barry Pilmore finished fourth.
The boys from the Eyre Peninsula (Western Zone) won the championships.
On day one of the championships Southern were defeated by Western by 18 points to signal the intent of the eventual winning region. Great Southern players Ben Davis, Brett Ellis, Matt Merrett and Jack McKay were four of the best.
In the second game on the Saturday, Southern took on Northern and won convincingly by 29 points. Once again Ellis, Merrett and Davis starred, along with Matt Dominish. It was not enough for Southern to reach the final, as Central also had won both games on the Saturday to earn the right to play Western for the title.
Southern met Murray South-East in the fight for third, but lost by 22 points. Davis and Ellis capped off a fine carnival with great performances and Sam Alexopoulos starred in defence.
Great Southern players Davis, Ellis and Alexopoulos were selected in the team of the championships and former Strathalbyn superstar Ben Simounds was also named. Simounds now plays for Keith and represented Murray South-East.
With the country championships complete there is the renewed focus on what will happen in the Great Southern Football League over the last seven rounds.
Victor Harbor will host their first grand final, as it will be like that when they meet Encounter Bay. Victor lose, their season will be over. A win and there is air left in their season.
