Another huge week of GSFL and just when we thought the five was set, another twist to the tale as Victor Harbor produced a big upset, knocking over McLaren. After a couple of weeks of poor form, the inclusion of Alleway couldn’t have come at a better time and they now sit in the five.
In other games, the Bays suffered a big defeat to the hands of the red hot Compass side. They suffered most as they slip outside of the five for the first time this year. Myponga-Sellicks did everything right and got the win against bottom placed Goolwa-Port Elliot.
In the other games, results were as expected as Willunga easily disposed of Strathalbyn and the Creek demolished Yank.
There are some games in round 16 that can really shape the five. Amazingly we have 1 v 2, 3 v 4 and 6 v 7.
Mount Compass v Langhorne Creek
Top of the table clash and only one point separates these two sides. Barring any disasters you would think this would decide the minor premiership. Sellar will need to be at his best to combat Hoban and the midfield battles with the likes of Viede, Marshall, Kellock and Earl running around. Creek in red hot form and Compass with the power forward line of Pinyon, Z Vitkunas and Ellis. This will be a classic. Tip: Compass by eight points.
McLaren v Willunga
McLaren’s loss last week has seen the race for the top three heat up and it’s Willunga chasing them. If Willunga win they square up the points with inferior percentage, if McLaren hold out then they probably lock in that all important double chance. McLaren are getting great service from the Matthews boys and youngsters Loots, Gill and Dunlop, but this week the guns in Mutton, Ellis, Watchmann and Bollenhagen need to step up. Willunga keep going about their business and the spread of contributors is great to see with Martin, Altus and Standfield. Tip: Willunga by 11 points.
Myponga-Sellicks v Encounter Bay
The Mudlarks despite winning last week are in trouble being 1.5 games out plus percentage but they can keep the door open with a win this week. The Mudlarks should see the return of Allan and the form of Carroll and Merrett gives them every hope at home. The Bays with injury concerns of their own and with Victor likely to win, they can’t drop this. Kleinig is in great form and Sweetman and Fyfe show promise. Karpany and Neale will be needed this Saturday. Tip: Bays by five points.
Strathablyn v Goolwa/ Port Elliot
The roosters suffered a big defeat last week but overall their season has showed promise with wins over two top five sides. Their good players are genuine stars in Marc and Sam Elliot, O’Grady, James and Peglar and it’s perhaps that experience that will be the difference. The Magpies have really trimmed up their margins and are showing improvement. Their time for getting that elusive win is running out. Tip: Strath by 27 points.
Victor Harbor v Yankalilla
The ups and downs of the Roos in season 2018 continued last Saturday. After a shock loss to Strath, they bounced back in style with a gutsy win against Mclaren. They need Aleway and his return was instrumental with the leadership he shows. Ross continues his mail medal form. Since the Tigers beat Goolwa/ Port Elliot they have suffered three 100 point losses and one by 90 points. Hard to see them winning here. Tip: Victor by 60+.
