For more than 40 years, ECH Victor Harbor resident Vernon ‘Ray’ Raymond and his Japanese friend Yoneko have kept in touch – the only thing that’s changed is the technology they use. Ray and his late wife were on a flight to the UK when they met Yoneko, who had been on a working holiday in Australia and was going to do the same in Europe.
They kept in touch through regular letters and co-ordinated visits over the years.
“Yoneko’s like a daughter to me, and our friendship has become even more important to me since my wife’s passing,” Ray says.
Now, Ray and Yoneko send each other text messages and emails, and chat on the phone and via Skype. Ray has learned these skills by attending IT workshops at the ECH Day Program. For Yoneko’s visit earlier this year, Ray learned how to use Google Maps and other online resources.
“I can even take photos on my smartphone and upload them to the computer,” Ray says.
