Zonta Club of Fleurieu Peninsula inducts new member at July meeting

At the Zonta Club of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s meeting at the Hotel Victor on Tuesday, July 24, new president Margaret Stephens welcomed members and guests.

During the induction of guest Lesley Sporn, members were reminded the word Zonta is derived from a Lakota term meaning honest and trustworthy.

Zonta’s mission is the empowerment of women through service and advocacy.

Lesley Sporn, a long-time resident of Victor Harbor and retired teacher, was presented with a Zonta yellow rose after she was inducted as a new member to the club.

Our guest speaker was Goolwa Community Centre acting coordinator Jane French, who gave an interesting talk about the centre’s vision and aims, and provided information about the many workshops available to the community.

She said it was a place where people could learn and be inspired as well as feel supported to explore opportunities, whether looking for employment or to gain new skills.

General business for the evening focused on fundraising events such as the upcoming fashion parade at the Lutheran Centre on Friday, August 17. Tickets can be purchased at Sinclair Florist in Ocean Street.

There will also be a raffle with some fantastic prizes. Zonta members will be selling raffle tickets outside Woolworths on Saturday, August 11 and Thursday, August 16.

August will be a busy month for Zonta members, who will also be cooking the sausage sizzle at Bunnings on Sunday, August 26.
