Victor Harbor and Willunga Football Clubs involved in Indigenous football match

The Victor Harbor and Willunga Football Clubs played a game on Saturday at the Willunga oval, which honoured Indigenous culture. Both teams wore especially designed guernseys depicting their regions’ Aboriginal history.

Elders Allan Sumner and Archie Kartinyeri were present with Allan presenting the Smoking Ceremony and Welcome To Country. The two football A grade teams lined up for the ceremony, as well as the Willunga and Victor Harbor netball teams.

Both teams had junior footballers involved in the ceremony, a boy and a girl each.

Shadow Aboriginal Affairs Minister Kyam Maher tossed the coin to start the A grade match. It is planned to be an annual event between the two teams with the 2019 event to be held at Victor Harbor.

For the record, Willunga won the football by 42 points with a nine goal last quarter and Victor Harbor won the netball.
