It is finals time in the Great Southern Netball Association

Congratulations to the Strathalbyn Netball Club on running a very successful semi final day, filled with tough battles, close margins, celebrations and disappointments.

My tips were as predicated, with Victor progressing to their 12th consecutive grand final appearance- an incredible achievement from this core bunch of players and GSNA coach of the year (or coach of the century, in my opinion), Pauline Edwards.

The wet conditions slowed the battle between them and Goolwa considerably and despite valiant efforts by Hannah Priest, Jess Cuppleditch and Kylie Jarrett, Victor remained far too strong across the court.

The defensive combination of Luka Millar, Sally Fuller and Emma G is one of the best in the state.

Goolwa need to return to the drawing board if they plan to get anywhere near these girls again in the grand final. Strathalbyn put in a fighting effort against Willunga, and despite their five goal defeat, should be proud of their efforts this season.

Amy Bull lined up in goals for Willunga and proved too strong for Emily Hopkins and Rachel Barnett, however the game was won in Willunga’s defence with several crucial turnovers in the dying minutes of the game.

Willunga are coming into this Saturday’s prelim with a bout of confidence, and an approach of ‘nothing to lose’.

KNOWS HOW TO WIN: Victor Harbor League star Alicia Montgomerie has been a key player for the Victor Harbor Netball Club as it heads to its 12 consecutive grand final.

Because of this, I know that they will throw absolutely everything at Goolwa in an attempt to make their very first GSNA league grand final.

Last time the two teams met, Willunga were without their key defender Anna Aldrige, who has a hard task ahead of her on Kylie this weekend.

They were also without Georgia Hank, who is a strong, natural leader through Willunga’s mid court.

Willunga will match the height of Goolwa’s ends, and speed of the centre, however this game will be won with experience.

Jo Wilson is providing great leadership and support within the goal circle, as is Lauren Hyde as she rotates through positions in defence.

Goolwa have a lot to prove after their 26 goal thrashing by Victor and will not let anything get in-between them and redemption. Goolwa to win by 13.

I would like to congratulate Luka Millar on being named the league’s best and fairest player of 2018. Luka has had an incredible season in the Victor defence line and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club.

Kylie Jarrett came second, by only a whisker and much like Luka, had a brilliant season as player-coach for the Goolwa side.

To juggle the responsibility of coach, along with achieving this honour and being named goal shooter of the year, is to be highly commended.
