The first summer twilight of the new sailing season was held on Friday night by the Goowla Regatta Yacht Club.
Sponsored by South Coast Marine, the PRO Uncle Rick had the yachts sailing a three leaf clover course with multiple options of the order the buoys could be rounded and this produced lots of banter on the water between the skippers.
Blaze’ skippered by Ben Kelsey was an early leader being first to the rounding mark closely followed by Sea Bomb and the rest of the fleet. At this point the yachts seemed to scatter in all directions as the skippers decided which order was best to sail the course.
The results were announced outside on the club’s Thornquest Deck with new Commodore Louise Edwards and Rear Commodore Trevor Baldock handling proceedings and handing out prizes. First was Blaze’, Ben Kelsey, second, Sea Bomb, Harry Cooper and third Elanora, Louise Edwards.
Race 2 of the Summer Twilight Series 1 will be held on Friday, October 19 and this will be followed on Saturday, October 20 at 11am by Come and Try Sailing at the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club. On Sunday, October 21, there will be the Fireball State Titles, so there is plenty of water and sailing action involving the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club in the coming fortnight.
The Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club was formed as the Goolwa Regatta Club some time prior to August 1854. Its original object was to organise an annual regatta featuring various types of water sports between members of the fishing fleet based at Goolwa and those of the whaling fleet at nearby Victor Harbor. It is believed to be Australia's oldest such club.
