Victor Harbor Yacht Club welcomed perfect sailing conditions for their Opening Day on Saturday, October 13. The season was officially opened by councillor and mayoral candidate Moira Jenkins. Moira told of previous adventures sailing 40 footers and Etchells.

On the water the boats made the usual sail past the Commodore Marcus Towell who was stationed on the start boat. The Lasers had a great turnout with six boats and some close racing prevailed. Steve Rogers sailed with both his daughters in his 125 dinghy.

Three Arrows made the start along with one Taipan and two Yvonnes, though the Yvonnes did one race each with the same crew so as to test each boat after the winter layoff. A few regulars were missing from sailing due to boat repairs and the club hopes to have them back on the water shortly.

Anyone wishing to try/learn to sail is encouraged to come out to the club’s Discover Sailing Day on Saturday,  October 20, from 10am to 3pm at the Yacht Club. There will be experts on hand in a variety of boats to give you a taste of sailing.

Discover Sailing Days are offered at many participating sailing clubs around Australia. They are a fantastic way to have a great day out with your partner, friends, work colleagues or family. At the Victor Harbor Yacht Club they look forward to showing you just how exiting, safe, accessible, and affordable sailing is.

A spokesperson said there was the option to go out for a short sail with an experienced sailor, have a look around the club facilities, and find out about the programs and sailing courses available.

“There is something for the whole family and even kids as young as five years old can sail, when accompanied by a parent or guardian,” spokesperson said.
