Thousands of food and wine lovers turned out last Sunday to enjoy the annual Cittislow Smoke Off Festival that was held in Goolwa.
The festival, in its 11th year, is a slow cooking competition between twelve teams who work hard to produce the tastiest smoked food in one of the two categories: smoked “ham”; or “any other” smoked dish which could include fish, poultry or “other”.
The pungent aromas from the individual smoking teams’ ovens could be smelt for miles as the participants added their secret ingredients, whether it be herbs, spices, sauces or just a dash of something else.
Each team adopted a theme for the event and with colourful costumes, decorated marquees and some weird and wonderful cooks and assistants.
The day was a lot of fun as the public soaked up the atmosphere and enjoyed the free entertainment, live music and local food and wines.
The Currency Creek CFS provided a delicious barbecue with proceeds from the sales going towards their organisation and the Goolwa RSL was open to the public for drinks during the festival.
Cittaslow Goolwa spokesperson Ken Smith said the organisers of Smoke Off were “over the moon with the success” of the event.
“Many people who attended the festival said that this was one of the best community events seen in Goolwa for a long time,” he said.
All local food and wine vendors had a busy day with some even selling out of their product.
Food judges were Professor Barbara Santich, Ashley Porter and Marina Goldsworthy, and theme judges were Libby Wall and Erica Harris.
