This Christmas season the Victor Harbor Public Library, will once again be participating in the ‘Give the Gift of Reading’ program.
The Give the Gift of Reading is a program that encourages our local community to donate a new children’s book (for children aged between 0-18 years) to the library.
These books will then be distributed around the Fleurieu and southern Adelaide to children in need, just in time for Christmas. This year donations will be forwarded to Grandparents for Grandchildren SA for distribution.
Grandparents For Grandchildren is a voluntary not for profit organisation formed over 16 years ago as a result of the need for community support and advocacy for grandparents and other kinship carers who could be struggling with the emotional, financial and legal complexities of caring for their grandchildren.
The Give the Gift of Reading Program highlights the importance of literacy in lifelong learning.
Reading to a child from an early age has been proven to assist children in literacy development and is a wonderful time for children and caregivers to bond.
To assist local children, the Victor Harbor Public Library is asking for community support through the donation of a new children’s book.
For some children this may be the first book they have ever owned and possibly the only present they will be receiving this Christmas.
“The City of Victor Harbor is proud to continue to support the Give the Gift of Reading initiative in order to assist those in need within our community,” City of Victor Harbor CEO Victoria MacKirdy said.
“The gesture of donating a book will make Christmas memorable for the young person who receives the special gift, and I ask those who can to support this great initiative.”

The Victor Harbor Public Library will be collecting the children’s books from Friday, November 9, until 5pm on Tuesday, December 4. It is an opportunity to make someone’s Christmas special.
Books do not need to be gift wrapped, this will be done by library staff and volunteers. The gifts will then be placed under the library’s Christmas tree until they are collected by Grandparents for Grandchildren SA.
‘Give the Gift of Reading’ was initiated by Playford Library Services in 2012 and has won various community and local government awards.
