A smart bench which is the first of its kind in the area has been installed in Rotary Park, Christies Beach.

Unveiled on the Tuesday, December 4, the bench is equipped with WIFI capabilities, USB charging, wireless charging, ‘seat temperature control’ and completely powered by solar panels

City of Onkaparinga Director of City Operations Kirk Richardson said, this will be the first bench of its kind in the area and council is excited to trial this innovative new technology.

“Not only is it free for them to charge up their devices, it also uses 100 per cent renewable solar energy, so it’s good for the environment too,” he said.

The ‘smart’ product is named Steora and is developed by European hardware company 'Include'.

Include’s company mission is to build technology which improves the lives of those using urban spaces.

To help make the bench vandal and weather resistant, the bench has been constructed from powder-coated steel and if the bench receives any problems, the owners (City of Onkaparinga) are alerted.

If the trial of this bench is successful, others may be installed.
