With the stress of Christmas behind us, it’s now time to look ahead to 2019.
It feels like I was saying a similar line only a couple of months ago when looking ahead to 2018 – this year sure has flown!
With a new year comes new possibilities. Think of the humble New Year’s Resolution. It is a chance to reflect on how you have lived life in recent times and how you can better it or change it.
Asking around the office what everyone’s 2019 resolutions are, the theme of health seems to be prevalent. Michael wants to lose a couple of kilos, Jack wants to get back to the fitness he had before living in Europe, and I want to improve my diet.
(Putting this in print and out into the world makes it a bit more permanent, I guess – we’ll reassess where we’re at in six months’ time.)
How many of you have stuck to a New Year’s Resolution? I think personally I have only been successful twice.
Only one was measurable; I convinced myself I would go without fast food for a whole year. There was no one more shocked than myself when that year came to an end and I had only caved to a pizza once.
The other one was to listen better. I remember coming across words from Stephen R. Covey: “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” I knew I was guilty of this and I wanted to change it. It is hard to tell whether I did actually listen more, but either way I think I was successful because I was making a conscious effort to do so.
Here’s the kicker: I could’ve started consciously doing this months before I did. I could’ve started as soon as I read those words. When I saw them, I thought I was doing an alright job at it. But it wasn’t until I was trying to come up with a resolution for that coming year when I thought, “Yep, I’m going to listen more and listen better”.
The thing is, we don’t have to wait till January 1 to make a change. Whether it be in our own life, someone else’s life, or in the environment, we can change right this very minute.
There is something about the start of a new year and a clean slate which makes us feel like we are better equipped to start something. The truth is, a change in the date doesn't change your lifestyle; a change in your mindset does.
Time is is relative. Be the change you wish to see in the world, now.
