Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes said the Alexandrina Council and community are pleased to welcome the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under when it rolls through the region in Stage 5 next week.
“We are thrilled to host Stage 5 of the race and the ever popular Challenge Tour in our region,” said Parkes.
On Saturday 19 January, Challenge Tour riders will tackle the same route as the professional riders from Glenelg to Strathalbyn in the ultimate test of stamina.
With start locations at Glenelg, Myponga, Victor Harbor and Goolwa, there's a course to cater for every skill level.
The professionals will tackle a 149.5km trek from Glenelg to Strathalbyn, following the western flank of the Fleurieu through Sellicks Hill, Myponga and Yankalilla, then heading further inland through Inman Valley and Victor Harbor.
From there, a sea breeze will refresh riders as they are cheered through Chiton, Port Elliot and Middleton before a high speed pass through Goolwa and onto their final push to Strathalbyn.
Mayor Parkes said the event will bring great social and economic benefits to the region, particularly Strathalbyn, where the stage finish will be warmly celebrated.
“Strathalbyn is a beautiful township, rich in heritage appeal, and we are excited to have it showcased on the world stage as the peloton sprints through to the finish line on Dawson Street,” he said.
“As riders follow the race route through Alexandrina and the wider Fleurieu, they will be graced with the scenery and warm hospitality that we, as residents, are lucky enough to experience on a daily basis.”
