It is impossible to wipe the smile off popular Victor Harbor identity Sid James' face. As race director for Victor Triathlons, Sid held the 25th event and it proved to be "one of the best yet".

More than 1000 people took part, including Sid himself. The event was held on Sunday, March 10, and Sid James, who is a quadriplegic, was able to compete in the Olympic distance triathlon due to the heroic feats of Ironman and good friend Kevin Fergusson.

For two years, Kevin has been helping Sid realise his dream of competing in triathlons and on Sunday he pulled the rubber duck in the 1.5 kilometre swim leg, towed the race director on the 40 kilometre bike ride and to then pushed him in the 10 kilometre run. Amazingly the pair finished mid-field.

"The event was an outstanding success and I wish to thank everyone," Sid said.

"To be able to not just organise this great event, but to also take part, is a real privilege and honour and I thank Kevin for everything he does for me.

"It is a real eye opener being in your own race and seeing the infrastructure we put in place, the work of all our volunteers first hand and of course the magnificent sights we have on the race circuit. Victor Harbor is a spectacular place to live and perfect for this event to be held."

One of the most pleasing aspects for Sid was the huge number of mini triathletes who took art in 2019.

"We had more than 200 mini triathletes (under 11) and this shows the next generation is coming through, which augers well for the event well into the future and the fitness levels of youngsters in the region," he said.

"Once again the event caters for everyone and all fitness levels and it was great to see the elite athletes compete and also the many families who took part. I thank the community, council, volunteers and the residents of Encounter Lakes for their support, not just this year, but the 25 times they have assisted to make this happen."
