A new community group that operates on the social media site Facebook is giving locals in the southern region of Adelaide the opportunity to share unwanted items with other residents for free.

The page which is titled Guardian Gifters of South Adelaide was created by Lana Keskisaari and Rebecca Foran in 2018 and has since grown to 679 members.

While there are other gifting groups around co-creator Rebecca Foran said her and Lana created the group when they decided they wanted to have a group which gave all members an equal chance to claim items, not just first in best dressed which is how many other groups work.

"If we have a good item we put it on a random draw, everyone can say 'yes please' and then we give them all a number and then different people win those prizes."

Ms Keskisaari added that this allows for people who may be stuck at work or doing other things to also see the item and have a chance to obtain it.

While the group is largely used for clothing, it also features a posting thread called 'Treasure Trove' where people can list items they require which then enables others to potentially fulfil these requests.

Ms Foran said the group is not a pay-it-forward group and members do not need to feel obligated to do so but people still appreciate it.

One member who has really struggled - we have helped her refurbished her whole house and get her going with her baby, now she's actually got things that she is putting on the page too

"One member who has really struggled - we have helped her refurbished her whole house and get her going with her baby, now she's actually got things that she is putting on the page too," she said.

The main rule of the group is to not be selling any items through the page as that deters from the purpose of the group. Aside from this they aim to maintain a respectful environment where users are never made to feel ashamed or embarrassed - using polite mannerisms is also a very important part of the group.

Ahead of Mothers Day the group are doing a draw where members are able to win brand new items, a similar draw at Christmas saw the group giveaway 110 items.
