The Hawks hosted the visiting Willunga Demons on Saturday at Hawk Park. The Demons had not won at the ground for a number of years, but at the final siren they managed a slim victory.
The game began with the ruck duel with the Hawk's Arbon against Willunga's Bass. Early play was congested until Hawk Mitch Cleggett marked and goaled. From here the Hawks dominated the first quarter with goals to Grosvenor, Kellock and Haylock. The Demons managed two majors through the hands of Burdett ands Miegel.
The second term was a tight affair with the Demons having the upper hand. The Demon big men were causing trouble for the smaller Hawk defenders. Hunt had the first goal for the visitors and poor undisciplined play from the Hawks gifted Renney a goal straight afterwards.
The Hawks managed four goals for the term, but it was the Demons who were more productive, adding a further six before the main break in a high standard game of football.
Langhorne Creek led at halftime by 10 points.
The second half began with a quick goal to Howell for the home side, but the quarter belonged to the Demons who piled on eight goals to the Hawks two. It was the Demons' Hunt and Miegel who were hurting the Hawks with the latter player kicking two goals in succession. The Hawk defence was in disarray with the Willunga big men controlling the marking contests. The Demons were getting plenty of drive through Nelson.
Willunga had a handy 25 point lead at the last change.
The final term was a great contest, with the Hawks working hard to pull back the deficit. The first goal of the quarter went to Demon Miegel, but from then on the Hawks had the better of the visitors. Two goals each to Mitch Cleggett and Howell had the home side back in the hunt.
The Hawks had most of the play and were constantly peppering their goal lines. They had opportunities to win the game, but a late goal to Haskett for the Demons sealed the game for Willunga at the final siren.
The Demons had good contributors in Miegel and Nelson. The Hawks were well served by Arbon, Mitch Cleggett with five goals and Derham.
