An Encounter Bay woman was run over by her own car after her young granddaughter disengaged the handbrake.

Emergency services were called to the 57-year-old's house on Wishart Crescent just after 1.30pm on Saturday, July 6.

She had left the car parked in the driveway, but the toddler took the hand brake off and as the woman rushed to the car, it knocked her her down and ran her over.

The woman was transported to South Coast District Hospital, where she was stabilised before she was flown to Flinders Medical Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The toddler was not hurt.

Police will be investigating the incident.
