The final stages of Strathalbyn's $2 million Sandergrove Road Revitalisation Project were completed last week, finalising the long-awaited revamp of the town's entrance.

Alexandrina Council has described the upgrade as a "stunning, new boulevard style entrance" to Strathalbyn.

Significant street-level enhancements to underground power lines and the installation of new heritage-style streetlamps preceded recent comprehensive civil and landscape works, which included new footpaths, street-side kerbing, a stormwater management system, road asphalting, street furniture, trees and landscaped gardens.

The final stage of the project, which began in October 2018, faced delays when it was discovered there was a significant clash between an existing CWMS sewer main and required upgrades to stormwater infrastructure as part of the project.

Alexandrina Council was forced into committing an extra $161,000 to the project at their March meeting to rectify the issue and an amended completion date was slated for late July.

This target was only held up slightly, due to inclement weather delaying asphalting.

Alexandrina Council's chief executive officer Glenn Rappensberg recognised the important economic and social benefits the completion of the project offered Strathalbyn and the Alexandrina region.

"Council is thrilled to present the completion of this project which affords the southern entrance of Strathalbyn a new and invigorated identity," he said.

"The appearance and quality of key roads in Strathalbyn is paramount in delivering a strong economy and an enjoyable, functional town for both the local community and visitors alike.

"This project is an outcome of the Strathalbyn District Centre - Traffic, Parking and Streetscape Plan and is a significant step towards the transformation of the Strathalbyn town centre."

In June, Alexandrina Council announced the attainment of grant funding from the state government's Planning and Development Fund to further enhance the Strathalbyn streetscape by better utilising open spaces and improving traffic flow throughout the town.

The Minister for Planning announced a contribution of $536,000 towards the project, with council financing the remaining 50 per cent of the project.

Mayor Keith Parkes was delighted with the upgrade and looked forward to seeing further streetscape improvements in the coming years.

"We thank the Strathalbyn community for their support and patience while the work has been undertaken on Sandergrove Road, and they can now enjoy the aesthetic and practical improvements it provides," he said.

"With the recent state government grant funding, we can progress streetscape enhancements in the town centre to ensure Strathalbyn retains its heritage appeal while implementing more efficient wayfinding and traffic infrastructure to cope with a growing population."

With the Sandergrove Road works project now complete, the commencement of the Strathalbyn Town Centre Revitalisation Project is expected for the middle of next year.
