The first Great Southern Football League premiership trophy on offer in 2019 was won on Sunday by the McLaren Football Club.
The Mini Colts grand final was played at Strathalbyn Oval and McLaren defeated Encounter Bay by one point in an absolute heart-stopper. Encounter Bay had most of the play throughout the match and had many occasions to seal the game, but the never give up attitude of the McLaren youngsters proved decisive in the end.
Both teams provided an outstanding showcase of the future talent to play in the Great Southern Football League with a brand of football which had the huge crowd on their toes and on the edge of their seats for the entire game.
In the final term and throughout the final minutes, Encounter Bay had all the play and peppered the goals, but could only manage minor scores, and looked set to hang on. However, McLaren thought otherwise, trailing 1-6 to 1-1.
The McLaren boys opened the Strathalbyn ground up and ran the ball from the congested Encounter Bay forward line where all the play had been to the McLaren scoring zone and against the flow of the match, scored the winning major.
This brought ecstasy to the McLaren team, coaches and supporters and disappointment to the Encounter Bay camp.
South Adelaide Ambassador John Griffen presented the premiership trophy to the McLaren leaders.
