Sailing season opens at the Victor Harbor Yacht Club.

The Victor Harbor Yacht Club will open its sailing season on Saturday, October 12.

The club has had a busy off season, undertaking maintenance on the support boat and trailers, while five members of the support boat team qualified for their Australian Sailing Safety Boat Certificate.

The Open Day will commence with a light lunch at noon before the official opening at 1pm.

This year the local member for Finniss, the Honourable David Basham will do the honours and get the season underway.

The opening address will be followed by the traditional sail past before the first race staring at approximately 2:15pm.

A full program of handicap and championship races has been developed by the Sailing Committee, providing sailors with ample race preparation prior to the various national title series around Christmas and New Year.

This season the club will host the Yvonne 20 Catamaran Titles and local sailors will be keen to wrestle the trophy back from the current holders, Western Australia.

A number of Arrow sailors will head to Townsville for the 53rd running of their title series.

Victor Harbor sailors have been prominent in the Arrow class for many years.

The attraction of big national sailing events to come to Victor Harbor has been a massive plus for the Victor Harbor Yacht Club and enhances the club's reputation nation-wide.

On October 26, the club will hold its first Discover Sailing Day of the season.

This will be an opportunity for anyone interested in the sport of sailing to come and try, with participants provided with the opportunity to try out in dinghies and catamarans.

Victor Harbor Yacht Club has recently been accredited to provide the new 'Out There Sailing' Program.

'Out There Sailing' focuses on the 12 to 17 old group, with dinghies, catamarans, stand up paddle boards and power boats opportunities provided for participants.

The first group to undertake the program will be the Victor Harbor High School SACE Aquatics group.

Their class will commence on Wednesday, October 16 and run for six weeks.

Discover Sailing classes and Out There Sailing will also be provided mid week for after school sessions and Saturday mornings.

The club promotes sailing for all ages.
