The Probus Club of Victor Harbor/Granite Island held its 150th general meeting on September 25, where president Sandy Mayhew introduced a nautical theme for members.

For the meeting, members observed and dressed to the theme. President Sandy and member Brian Gaull ran a nautical trivia quiz - after which Brian played nautical/sea shanty pieces on the piano for members to accompany in song. Member Roy Fife, at 90 years, was presented the club's Noble Beyond Ninety award by Fay Williams. Sandy inducted two new members, Sandy and John Powell, into the club.

Guest speakers were Bonnie and Bruce Marriott, a couple who share a passion for adventurous activities, including sailing. Retiring early from professional life, they sailed around the world.

On a voyage between Australia and New Zealand they engaged their survival skills to sail out of the perfect storm - a full account was given. Another voyage involved a near encounter with a US aircraft carrier which was headed towards their vessel on a dangerous course.

After the meeting, 61 members headed to the Port Elliot Bowling Club to enjoy a luncheon prepared by the Bowling Club's catering team.

Granite Island Probus participates in activities and day trips. Meetings are at Carrickalinga House on the fourth Wednesday of each month, excluding December. Ph: 0487 835 977.
