When Flo Haggerty's husband and Leon Blight's wife passed away, neither ever expected to find love again - let alone with each other.

Flo and Leon, both 79, have known each other since they were 19, they were in each other's weddings, and supported each other while their partners were sick.

Flo's husband Alan passed away after a battle with cancer six-and-a-half years ago, while Leon's wife Marilyn died four-and-a-half years ago after living for a multiple sclerosis for many decades.

It was a hug during one of his regular visits four years ago that changed everything for them, Leon said. "One day I walked in and we hugged each other, and four or five minutes passed and we hadn't said anything. We've been together ever since," he said.

The pair, who both live at Stockland's Bay Village Retirement Estate at Encounter Bay, are like "lovesick teenagers", Leon said. It was this feeling that prompted him to get down on bended knee on New Year's Eve 2019 and ask Flo to marry him.

When asked what Flo loved most about Leon, she said he was a "lovely, generous, caring man".

"He loves me so much, I know by the beaming smiles I get from him," she said.

Leon was speechless when he was asked. "You couldn't write it all. You'd have a dictionary full of words."

The couple will be married at Bay Village on March 7.
