The Asics Victor Harbor Triathlon returns this March in its 26th iteration, still going strong after almost three decades.
The town will be abuzz on Sunday, March 8 when hundreds of competitors prepare to test their mettle in a variety of events being run on the day.
In 2019, following its milestone 25th year, the Victor Harbor Triathlon was named Event of the Year for the second time at the State Triathlon Awards held at the West Beach, and race director Sid James was proudly in attendance to collect the award, alongside good friend and Ironman Kevin Fergusson.
The event regularly draws large crowds to Victor Harbor, providing an annual boost to the economy.
The best part of the event for me, is seeing the kids enjoy themselvesRace director, Sid James
With an average of 800-1000 participants each year, plus support crews, onlookers and family members; it makes for a big day out in Victor Harbor, that also benefits the wider community.
Accommodation across the region generally books out and local business benefit from an uptake in visitors.
Sid said he was once again looking forward to hosting another great event and encouraged those thinking about competing to get involved and give it a crack.
"If you're thinking about it, just jump in and have a go," he said.
"There is an event and distance to suit everyone."
Sid expects another bumper crowd this year, for what is considered the biggest event on the triathlon calendar in South Australia.
The event features triathlons of Short Course, Standard and Mini distances, as well as five and 10 kilometre fun runs.
Reflecting on the event, Sid said the best part was seeing the enjoyment people get out of it.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the kids enjoying themselves, it's the best part of the event for me, seeing their smiles," he said.
"The event has developed so much since its inception and if we can continue pushing and get to 30 years, I'll be a very happy man.
"I am very fortunate to have the support of the Fleurieu community, the City of Victor Harbor and the residents of Encounter Lakes and its surrounds."
