Many people across the Fleurieu have been saddened by the recent passing of Don Overall, who has been remembered for his immense contribution to the local environment.
Don joined the Field Naturalists Society in the early 1980s, was a keen bird watcher, and interested in the geology of the Victor Harbor area as well as its vegetation.
In 1982, the Year of the Tree, he was a key instigator of Nangawooka Flora Reserve. For thirty eight years Don helped plant, maintain and promote the reserve, working at first with The Field Naturalists and Zonta, and then with the Australian Plants Society (Fleurieu Region), The Friends of Nangawooka and Victor Harbor Council.
In 2010, he handed over supervision of the garden, but continued to work there regularly.
One of the founding members of the Australian Plants Society (Fleurieu), Don served as president and secretary. Made a life member in 2002, he continued to encourage others to grow native, as he did in his own garden, at Nangawooka, the Adare Church, Scout Centre, and the Victor Harbor Primary School.
Don's other interests included singing in the Fleurieu Male Choir and ballroom dancing with his wife, Ronda. He was devoted to his family, and a staunch member of Adare Uniting Church.
Admired and respected for his knowledge, generosity and dedication, he will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends.
