Arrest made after false report of assault and vehicle theft in Normanville

A man has been arrested by South Australian police after falsely reporting he was assaulted before having his car stolen.

The man contacted police around 8.30pm on Thursday, March 19, reporting he was approached by a stranger in the carpark of a Normanville hotel, before being pushed over.

He alleged this individual then drove off in his Holden station wagon.

A short time later, police patrols were called to Wirrina Cove, following reports the station wagon had been found on fire.

Investigations by Victor Harbor CIB identified a number of inconsistencies regarding the validity of the man's version of events.

Detectives then attended the man's home and carried out a search, locating items of interest which allegedly implicated him.

The 44-year-old man from Reynella was charged with arson, create false belief and deception.

He has been bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on 20 April.
