ALL THAT IS LEFT: The Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club has been demolished to make way for the new $6 million build at Horseshoe Bay.

It became official on Friday, May 29, as Emergency Services Minister Corey Wingard presented the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club (PESLSC) with $4.895 million for its new development.

Alexandrina Council granted $330,000, which coincided with the fundraising efforts of the PESLSC ($750,000), pushing the total to approximately $6 million for the project at Horseshoe Bay.

And now it is official that the building that has contained so much history, but used up its use by date, has been reduced to rubble.

Life Governor of the PESLSC Bob Bruce has been a member of the club since 1955 and witnessed four building projects during his time.

"The new development is fantastic for the club and our community. This will attract more members and aid keeping the beaches safer," Mr Bruce said.

"The development will be a boost for the family culture at the club and will definitely sustain the club's future well into the future."

The redevelopment will include a complete rebuild of the clubhouse, a new restaurant and bar and warm showers for patrolling members.

The planning committee of the club consisted of president Peter Francis, Bob Bruce, Kym Overall and Matt Smith.

The building was demolished last week and now the project has been fenced off to allow excavation work, which will then be followed by the build and a celebratory finish. The project has been in the pipeline for more than a decade.
