The Southern Fleurieu Racing Pigeon Club has some very passionate members, but none more than Eric Joy.

Eric took on the best and nearly proved to be the best in the Lyndhurst Young Bird Derby. Eric and his prestigious and very talented bird finished second against 2652 other pigeons that came from everywhere to grab the title.

Eric's pigeon flew the 553 kilometres at a velocity of 2235 metres per minute (134 kms per hour).

The Southern Fleurieu Racing Pigeon Club has a long and rich history.

Every week they race their pigeons and Eric Joy said it was a satisfying sport, racing pigeons.

"It is a process getting your pigeons fit and ready to race and then of course not losing them," Eric said.

"It is more critical than winning the race sometimes. The pigeon is an amazing bird, how they can be released at race point, as far as Alice Springs and some how find their way home, back to Victor Harbor.

"This is phenomenal and why I have a love for pigeons."
