Victor Harbor and Port Elliot Lions Club introduce new Board for coming year

The Victor Harbor and Port Elliot Lions Club held its Handover to the incoming President and the new Board at the Boulevard Café, at Encounter Bay, on Tuesday, July 21.

The new Board consists of Craig Harris, Gail Smith, Brian Yuill, Joh McCallum, Chris Ramsey, Karen Winston, June Albon, John Nagel, Garry Edwards and Ian McCallum.

Immediate Past President Brian Yuill thanked the outgoing Board and reflected on some of the projects and fundraisers undertaken over the year.

The BBQ focused on Childhood Cancer and raised $1 000 at the Investigator College Sports Day, the club collected 72,000 stamps for Elliot Gardens, Lions Children's Mobility Foundation, entered a Xmas Pageant Float, bushfires appeal, KI Tank Pumps with a collection centre at Yankalilla for, donations to KI bushfire affected people, Defibrillators which were purchased and installed, Hearing Dog training support and collaborated with Variety to support funding of VH R-7 School's Sensory Swing.

Brian also presented a special Community Award to Club Member Andrew Craig for his commitment to the club's work and his support to the community generally. Incoming President Craig Harris outlined several plans for the coming year.

A feature of the evening was Laura Harris, from the Lions Hearing Dogs Centre, presenting a working dog's collar to Casper, the Lions Hearing Dog.

Lions Clubs across Australia, with the help of corporations and private sponsors, support the Lions Hearing Dog Centre at Verdun with each dog's training costing approximately $37 000. The Centre is now training Diabetes Medical Alert Dogs under Laura Harris' guidance.

Ruth Pearsons officiated at the ceremony where all Board Members committed to serving the needs of our Community.

Numbers are dropping in most community service clubs for several reasons, and now with increased people needing support due to the health and economic consequences of COVID-19, the work of volunteers is even more necessary.
