Women from across the state converged at the Chiton Rocks Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday, March 27, for the Australian Local Government Women's Association SA (ALGWA SA) dinner for International Women's Day.
A panel of six inspirational women took to the stage and discussed their lives in politics to a sold out crowd, which included many school-aged attendees.
Jointly sponsored by the three Fleurieu Councils: Alexandrina, City of Victor Harbor and District of Yankalilla, plus Donlan's Lawyers, the event was a huge success.
Speakers included Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie, LGA President and Mayor Angela Evans and Ngarrindjeri leader Jade McHughes.
Also on the panel were City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins, Cr Davina Quirk (Yankallila) and Cr Bronwyn Lewis. Cr Michael Scott OAM represented Mayor Parkes on behalf of Alexandrina Council and many other elected members from across the state were in attendance.
These councillors were spread across the room by organisers and spent time interacting with young people who were chosen from local schools and sponsored to attend.
"It was lovely to see the young people engaged with the people at their table and the conversations were flowing over a sumptuous menu," Cr Bronwyn Lewis said.
"All six speakers had very different experiences... and some of the key messages were: people get voted out not in, embrace strong male champions, have mentors (and become mentors) and finally, be true to yourself."
