Willunga opened grand final day in the Great Southern Football League at Yankalilla with a devastating display of junior football. The team was led by Sid Draper, who took his own football to the game and easily won the inaugural Ryan Griffen Medal.
McLaren were hit by injuries to key players coming into the game and struggled from first bounce.
Goals to Smith, Miller and Saunders and a bundle of points had Willunga up and about. McLaren could not penetrate the Demon defence and were held scoreless for the term and trailed by 25 points at the first change.
McLaren made a move in the second with Elliott kicking their first major, but it did not stop the Demons as they replied through Saunders and the margin was 26 points at half time.
There was still time for McLaren to get back in the game, but according to Willunga there was just more time for them to build a bigger score.
In the third term, Willunga kicked goals through Wadewitz and two from Draper and again held McLaren scoreless. Nye was impressive for Willunga and winning many touches.
With the lead now 47 points the game was over and the premiership won. McLaren youngsters never gave up and pushed hard in the last term. It was overwhelming odds though. Draper continued to rack up possessions, Nye won the hard ball and Moore and Collins played their roles.
At the final siren it was Willunga premiers for 2021 by 66 points.
