Senior Helpers Fleurieu, a locally operated and owned business, has started running a Dementia Cafe in their facility on Hindmarsh Island, which is open for everyone in the local community.
Managing Director of Senior Helpers Fleurieu Paul Ngo said the idea of Dementia Cafe was to create a safe environment for those living with dementia in the community, as well as their carers and family, to meet, socialise, receive support and advice from those who understood their situation.
"It is also an opportunity for people to break away from their daily repetitious routine when dealing with dementia. We have also been working with Dementia Australia for guidance and to become a part of the dementia friendly communities in South Australia," Paul said.
"We run this service once a month, on the last Wednesday of every month from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. It is open to everyone in the community regardless of who they are, their background or circumstances.
"We ask for a gold coin donation for coffee, tea and biscuits. This service is provided by some of our own staff and volunteers from the community.
"We ran our first session last month with success. I hope to be able to make the community more aware of our service as well as similar services out there for those living with dementia."
Senior Helpers Fleurieu is located at Coorong Quays Marina Office, Tolarno Drive, Hindmarsh Island.
