The first Championship Round for the 2021-22 dinghy racing season at Goolwa Aquatic Club (GAC) was held in a strong south-south-easterly breeze of 17 to 22 knots.
The senior fleet comprised seven Sabres, four Tasars and one Finn. All did well to stay upright and not trouble the rescue boat.
In the Tasars, Melissa and David in Rattle and Hum sailed consistently to take line honours in each race, ahead of Ben and Michelle Kelsey in second place in races 1 and 2, and Adrian and Rebecca Nicholson in race 3, with Peg Offler and Bryan Lindsay taking fourth place.
In the Sabres, John Gratton won the first race ahead of Rob Gale and Dave Steele; the second was a dead heat between John and Rob, with Dave again third. Unfortunately John retired after the second race, with race 3 going to Rob ahead of Dave and Ron Rickards, Peter Leader over the line at the start and disqualified. Local sailor Peter de Vries edged out Derek Maxted in race 1 for sixth place in the Sabres, before retiring, leaving Derek to pick up a sixth and a fourth in races 2 and 3.
For the senior fleet overall, yardstick placings went to Rob Gale (1st) ahead of Dave Steele (2nd) and Melissa and David (3rd). Aaron Heritage in the Finn placed seventh, mainly due to missing the first race. On handicap, Dave Steele and Peg/Bryan tied for first place, with Rob Gale taking third.
Only one boat contested the junior fleet, with Mitchell Kelsey and Lucas Byrnes racing the Cadet.
Next week is a non-championship round; a chance to tune up ahead of another Championship round the following Sunday, November. Bookings for the January Kids Learn-to-Sail at GAC are filling fast, so visit the club's website.
