Cricket resumed for most senior and junior sides on the weekend, however all matches involving Pt Elliot Cricket Club were postponed due to a COVID outbreak within the Pt Elliot community causing unprecedented player unavailability throughout their club.
This meant there were only two matches played in the A Grade. Noarlunga made light work of McLaren Districts, bowling them out for 77 then chasing them down inside 22 overs. Burgess continued his fine form for the Shoes, finishing 50 not out, giving his side some breathing room as they move into clear second on the ladder.
Goolwa and Encounter Bay played out a low scoring thriller and in the end Goolwa won by 2 runs. Goolwa were able to defend 116 thanks to some fine fielding with the last 3 wickets all run out. That was a crucial win for Goolwa, on the back of two heavy defeats prior to Christmas, who have now jumped Encounter Bay to sit third on the ladder.
This week is another round of one day matches with Pt Elliot hosting McLaren Districts at home. Pt Elliot will be hopeful to see the return of a number of key players, but this may be dependent on their COVID status. McLaren Districts are still chasing their first win of the season and with Pt Elliot not playing last week, they may be just that bit more match hardened. This will be a fascinating match and one where the result could go either way.
Encounter Bay host Willunga on the turf and Willunga will be itching to get back playing cricket having last played on December 5. Encounter Bay are always a challenge and especially at home. Bailey and Lintern will be leading the way for the home side and Willunga will look to their openers Harding and Docking to continue their form and lay the foundation for their stroke players.
In the final match of the round Noarlunga host Goolwa in a mouth-watering contest. This will be a great battle between second and third with Crees, Jones and Evans going up against Burgess, Bullard and Scarff this will be a fascinating contest of Bat v Ball. Goolwa have proven they are able to defend small totals with their attack, but Noarlunga might well prove a tougher opponent, especially on their home deck.
